New books from Social Computing: "Digital Humanitarians" authored by Dr. Patrick Meier, director of Social Innovation, is available, and "Twitter: A Digital Socioscope" edited by Y. Mejova, I. Weber, and M. Macy, is available for pre-order.

The Social Computing group is a multi-disciplinary team of social scientists, computer scientists, and software engineers. We are interested in understanding various social phenomena through the analysis of social media, and in using social media data to fuel time-critical applications. Our goal is to support decisions made by policy makers, emergency responders, journalists and others who benefit from knowledge and information generated in online media.

Our work includes the analysis of online communications regarding current news, political events, humanitarian crises, and mass emergencies. We draw from techniques in several areas including: natural language processing, sociology of disaster, machine learning, large-scale data mining, and information retrieval. We collaborate closely with Arabic Language Technologies and other teams at QCRI to generate scientific work that is locally relevant to the region while producing global impact.

Highlights as of March 2015

  • January 2015. The book Digital Humanitarians was published by Dr. Patrick Meier, Director of Social Innovation, QCRI. This published work highlights the work of QCRI's Social Computing team and the larger impact around the world, including a chapters highlighting MicroMappers, Artificial Intelligence for Disaster Response (AIDR) and other social computing successes. Dr. Meier has recently presented QCRI's successes at SXSW, Stanford, Columbia, and University of Canterbury (New Zealand).
  • March 2015. In response to the Cyclone Pam in Vanuatu, using Social Innovation tools and techniques, the team collaborated with partners to deliver an information map of over 1,000 images posted in social media, to evaluate Rapid Damage Assessments. In addition to the UN, the World Bank is using MicroMappers to rapidly analyze UAV (aerial) imagery of the disaster damage in very close collaboration with the Government of Vanuatu. The Vice President of the World Bank is particularly pleased with the initiative, which was only possible thanks to QCRI's MicroMappers platform and the Humanitarian UAV Network (UAViators), an initiative launched by QCRI Social Innovation Program.
